Since its founding in 2014 as Espace Mushagalusa, and its transformation in 2017 into the Afro-Canadian Museum, also known as Afromusée, our institution has established itself as a key player in preserving and promoting the history of Canadians of African descent. By safeguarding both material and immaterial heritage, we contribute to enriching the cultural landscape of Quebec and Canada while celebrating the diversity and richness of Afro-descendant cultures.
Over the years, we have built strong partnerships with renowned organizations such as Archives Montréal (ARCMTL), Centre Afrika, the International Centre for Documentation and Information on Haitian, Caribbean, and Afro-Canadian Affairs (CIDHICA), the Centre Culturel Afro-Canadien de Montréal (CCAM) and CELAT (Centre for Interuniversity Research on Cultures, Arts, and Societies). These collaborations have strengthened our expertise in managing and showcasing African and Afro-Canadian archives and collections.
Recently, our collections have been enriched with exceptional pieces: African artworks from the Grand Séminaire and the Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts, as well as significant private donations. Today, Afromusée houses over 1,200 works, valuable witnesses to the history and cultural richness of Afro-descendant communities. In response to this growth, we have expanded our space, now covering 5,500 square feet, to better accommodate these treasures.
However, Afromusée is much more than a place of remembrance: it is a vibrant and inclusive space where creativity thrives. With a dynamic stage and a brand-new studio dedicated to music and podcasts, we support emerging talent and encourage artistic innovation.
This expansion, however, brings important challenges. The conservation, exhibition, and dissemination of our collections require additional resources. Your support is essential to help us continue our mission and meet these challenges. With your contribution, we will:
- Modernize our infrastructure to ensure the sustainable preservation of our collections.
- Create immersive and educational exhibitions accessible to all.
- Develop intergenerational and intercultural programs.
